Wanzl GmbH & Co. Holding KG has joined the United Nations Global Compact. The world’s largest initiative for sustainable and responsible corporate governance has officially confirmed the inclusion of the Leipheim-based provider of solutions for Retail, Material Handling, as well as Airport and Hotel Services. By joining this initiative, Wanzl becomes part of a global network of companies and organizations committed to upholding the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact in the areas of human rights, labor standards, the environment, and anti-corruption. The inclusion underscores Wanzl’s commitment to integrating sustainability aspects into its business operations.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Our Wanzl CSR policy for environmental and social issues aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a strategic framework. The SDGs serve as a guide for our business operations and our understanding of sustainability. We aim to continuously integrate sustainability aspects into our processes and decisions, thereby contributing to selected sustainability goals. By joining the UN Global Compact, we reinforce this commitment and align ourselves with its Ten Principles in the areas of human rights, labor standards, environment, and anti-corruption.

EcoVadis Sustainability Rating Award

EcoVadis, the world’s largest recognized provider of sustainability ratings, has honored our commitment. With our voluntary EcoVadis certification, we demonstrate how well our corporate group has integrated the principles of sustainability and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) into our business and management system. The EcoVadis rating is based on a comprehensive assessment of 21 sustainability criteria spanning four core areas: environment, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement. The result was recorded in a points-based scorecard, enabling us to document our sustainability measures and share them with our business partners. The EcoVadis methodology is based on international sustainability standards – such as the Global Reporting Initiative, the United Nations Global Compact, and the ISO 26000 standard – and is monitored by a scientific panel of CSR and supply chain experts to deliver reliable CSR ratings.

FSC® Certification

The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) is an international, nonprofit organization that develops standards for responsible forest management. The FSC® certificate (FSC®-C147070) confirms that the respective wood and paper products meet the requirements of the FSC® system and originate from FSC®-certified sources or controlled supply chains. The FSC® standards incorporate the environmental, social, and economic aspects of forest management. Through our FSC®-certified products, we offer our customers a certified product option aligned with the FSC® system. Advanced surface coating with high-performance process technology

Wanzl operates a large-scale electroplating plant at its Leipheim site. A trivalent chromium plating process is used for the surface coating. The plant features advanced exhaust air purification systems that clean the resulting air streams using wet scrubbers and droplet separators. Furthermore, high-volume air circulation ensures a healthy working environment across the production areas.

Energy savings through heat recovery

A key component of the plant design is the use of process heat. The heat recovered from exhaust air treatment is used to heat the production facilities. This can save around 3 million kWh of energy per year – equivalent to around 270,000 m³ / 9.5 million cubic feet of natural gas or 300,000 liters / 79,000 gallons of heating oil. According to company data, this avoids between 500 and 770 metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually compared to conventional energy supply systems.

AfB social & green

As a further pillar of our commitment to sustainability, we are partnering with AfB social & green IT to give decommissioned IT equipment a second life. Through this partnership, 294 Wanzl IT devices were refurbished and mostly remarketed in 2023. As a result, this extends the lifecycle of these devices. Defective hardware was utilized for spare parts or to recover raw materials. Our partnership with AfB, an inclusive company employing individuals with disabilities, also supports social aspects of sustainability and contributes specifically to UN SDGs 8 and 12. According to AfB, refurbishing IT devices rather than manufacturing new ones conserves resources and reduces energy, water, and CO₂ emissions.
