The FastLaner® from Wanzl won 3rd place in the “Checkout & Smartstore” category at the REGAL Re|Tech Award 2026. The award ceremony took place at the REGAL Branchentreff 2026 industry event in Vienna. The award recognizes innovative technologies, systems, and concepts in the retail sector. In the “Checkout & Smartstore” category, the focus is on solutions that make brick-and-mortar stores smarter, improve the customer journey, and optimize checkout processes. With the FastLaner®, Wanzl has transformed the classic shopping cart into an intelligent shopping companion. The smart cart solution combines familiar handling with touch display, scanner, edge AI, and seamless connectivity to regular and self-checkouts.
Since February 2026, the FastLaner® has been used under real-world market conditions as part of a pilot project at the V-Markt Munich in the Euro-Industriepark. Together with Georg Jos. Kaes GmbH / V-Markt and its technology partners DRS and shopreme, Wanzl is testing connected self-checkout and express services for large-scale retail trade. The focus is on an ecosystem approach, which allows customers to choose from a variety of solutions.
For Wanzl, the award confirms that intelligent checkout solutions are highly relevant when they seamlessly integrate into existing store processes rather than operating as standalone solutions. Customers scan their items directly while shopping, are guided intuitively through the process, and can reduce checkout wait times. For retailers and employees, the FastLaner® creates efficiency, greater transparency regarding the shopping cart fleet, and additional security against inventory shrinkage. At the same time, the display on the shopping cart opens up new opportunities for digital customer engagement and retail media at the point of sale.
