The FastLaner® from Wanzl has been awarded 3rd place in the “Checkout & Smartstore” category at the REGAL Re|Tech Award 2026. The award ceremony took place as part of the 2026 REGAL industry event in Vienna. The awards honour innovative technologies, systems and concepts for the retail sector. In the “Checkout & Smartstore” category, the focus is on solutions that make brick-and-mortar stores smarter, improve the customer journey and optimise checkout processes. With its FastLaner® solution, Wanzl has taken the classic shopping trolley and evolved it into an intelligent companion while shopping. This smart cart solution combines familiar handling with a touch display, scanner, edge AI and seamless connection to checkout and self-checkout systems.
Since February 2026, the FastLaner® has been in use under real-life store conditions as part of a pilot project at the V-Markt store in Munich’s Euro-Industriepark district. Together with the retail company Georg Jos. Kaes GmbH/V-Markt and its technology partners DRS and shopreme, Wanzl is using the project to trial networked self-checkout and express services for large-scale retail settings. The focus of the pilot project is an ecosystem approach, in which customers can choose between different solutions.
For Wanzl, the award is confirmation that intelligent checkout solutions become particularly relevant when they are not designed as stand-alone solutions, but instead can be seamlessly integrated into existing store operations. Customers scan their items directly while shopping, receive intuitive guidance throughout the process and can reduce their waiting time at the checkout. For retailers and employees, the FastLaner® creates efficiency, greater transparency concerning the store’s trolley fleet, and additional security against shrinkage. At the same time, the display on the shopping trolley opens up new opportunities for digital customer contact and retail media at the point of sale.
