Digital mini market concept from Wanzl and tegut takes the reta Awards for 2021 by storm

Wanzl honoured as an award-winning technology partner

As in 2020, Wanzl once again captured the Top Supplier Retail Award 2021 in the Best Customer Experience category, this year as a technology partner to reta award winner tegut… Hessen supermarket chain tegut... is one of the first operators in Germany to develop a digital mini market concept together with retail expert Wanzl. Here, customers can shop for everyday essentials 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Access and payments are controlled via the tegut... app or solutions for debit or credit cards using smart technology. The high-tech “tegut... teo” mini market is based on the mobile store concept first launched by Wanzl at EuroShop 2020.

This year’s event was exclusively digital

reta awards 2021 was held in the digital domain this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At an online event on 15 March 2021 to launch the EHI Innovation Days, the reta awards 2021 winners will present their projects once more before receiving their awards. Register free of charge to follow the event here via livestream. The reta awards were set up by the EHI Retail Institute to recognise companies each year for their implementation of outstanding innovative technology solutions in retail. The Top Supplier Retail Award is presented jointly by the EHI in collaboration with industry magazine Lebensmittel Zeitung. Unfortunately, winners will not be able to receive their prizes in person. These will be sent by post, but this will not make the occasion any less special for the incredible winners. Bernhard Renzhofer, Sales Director at Wanzl, explains: “We are extremely proud to receive the Top Supplier Retail Award with our automated mini market concept. As an integrated systems provider, Wanzl has laid the foundations of autonomous shopping. Looking to the future, we hope to see more of our retail digitisation ideas put into practice, while making a vital contribution going forward in collaboration with our partners.”

In the opinion of the panel, consisting of representatives from industry, universities, and research institutes, Wanzl were well deserving of the award for their high-tech mini market, an outstanding solution of enormous strategic benefit to the retail industry. Ulrich Spaan, member of the Board of Trustees at the EHI, praised Wanzl: “With ‘teo’, tegut... put forward a groundbreaking strategy for digitised mini markets. We congratulate Wanzl for successfully supporting this project, and on their Top Supplier Retail Award presented in recognition of this. The mini market is user-friendly and intuitive, and offers the customer a unique shopping experience.”

Automated mini market concept

The innovative “tegut... teo” mini market allows around-the-clock autonomous shopping. On a sales floor of 50 m², customer can choose from 950 everyday essentials at any time, and pay for them using the app or at self-checkout terminals. Customers can access the mini market either by a QR code in the tegut... app, or using their debit or credit card, and then browse the mini market as normal. Guidance and advice are available in the app and the self-checkout terminals menu, and as analogue information on the sales floor. The selected goods can be paid for in two ways: Customers can simply scan the relevant barcode on the goods or shelf using the tegut... app on their smartphone, and then pay directly via the app using the stored payment method, or they can scan the goods at self-checkout terminals and then pay by debit or credit card. Digital mini markets are ideal for company premises, universities, or rural areas.
