Galaxy Gate welcomes employees at MAN Diesel & Turbo

Optimising efficiency is one route to cost-effective productivity; employee motivation is another. This also applies to MAN Diesel & Turbo in Augsburg and the approximately 4,000 employees it has in various areas, who ensure that the business runs properly each and every day. Their working day begins comfortably and smoothly – after all, they are greeted by the elegant Wanzl Galaxy Gate access lane in the bright, friendly foyer of the administrative building. The company’s employees value the convenience of this reception: they simply pull out their access cards, scan them, and the barriers open to let them in. The RFID reader makes this possible, integrated into the housing of the fully automatic “doorman”. During the authentication process, employees are registered in the personnel management system – a good start for everyone involved.

High security for high technology

In addition to personnel management considerations, entrances are also subject to stringent security guidelines. Klaus Pudel, Manager of Plant Security at MAN Diesel & Turbo, explains the business background: “Technological expertise and innovations are our assets, and we must protect them. There can be no compromises. Reliable, secure access for employees is imperative. With the Galaxy Gate, we are using cutting-edge technology.” In order to ensure the elegant access system can perform its function consistently, its stainless steel housing conceals the very best in high-tech equipment. Employees clock in using an RFID card, and networked software rapidly verifies the information stored in the system. This ensures that only authorised individuals are permitted to enter the building. Once the authorised release signal has been issued, the software-monitored, electric-motor-driven ESG swivel barriers open immediately. Optional ceiling-mounted sensors can scan people and behavioural patterns, ensuring that the process runs smoothly. In the event of tampering, the access gate responds with optical and acoustic alarms, and immediately closes the swivel arms.

Transparent personnel management

“Effective personnel management is essential for a modern employer such as MAN Diesel & Turbo. Collecting and monitoring data relevant to access control plays an important role in this regard, and automated check-in and check-out processes offer key services in precisely this area,” says Pudel. The Wanzl Facility Management Control Unit (FMCU) in the Galaxy Gate guarantees easy integration into existing personnel software systems, meaning that time recording and management are simplified to a significant extent. As such, all access points at MAN Diesel & Turbo are equipped with readers. When leaving the administration building, employees must clock out of the system. If they fail to do so, the Galaxy Gate denies them access next time they try to enter the building, because the individual in question is officially still in the building.

Be open: arrive and feel welcome

As employees and visitors approach the building, they are immediately struck by the modern, inviting windowed façade – a design concept that is implemented consistently throughout the reception area. Bright colours, minimalist fittings and the elegant Galaxy Gate greet all who enter. “The stylish design of the Galaxy Gate in high-quality stainless steel and glass appealed to us immediately. It ties in perfectly with the atmosphere of the foyer,” Pudel tells us enthusiastically. The discreet MAN lettering on the swivel barriers, and anthracite details on the housing exude tailor-made elegance. The RFID reader is also integrated into housing, flush with the surface and clearly visible. The green or red LED display in the handrail makes it easy to see whether access authorisation has been granted. Pudel emphasises: “Aesthetics, comfort and functionality play an important role. After all, we want employees, visitors and customers alike to feel welcome.”

Efficiency from the first step

The flexible construction system of the Galaxy Gate allows for customer-specific solutions. “The versatility of the access lane made installation a lot easier for us. Dimensions and passage widths could be adapted easily to suit our on-site conditions,” Pudel says, describing critical factors during the planning phase. A double system, consisting of a single and a tandem unit, ensures barrier-free access at MAN Diesel & Turbo. In addition, visually and architecturally harmonious Wanzl stainless steel and glass partitions define the reception area.
