Meliá Vienna (A)

In Austria’s tallest skyscraper

The Meliá Vienna opened in the Donau City Tower in February 2014

The guests at the opening were space legend Buzz Aldrin and New York’s former mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Together with French architect Dominique Perrault and hotel manager Dorothea Schuster, they inaugurated Austria’s tallest building: the DC Tower in Donau City and the new Meliá Vienna design hotel.

Standing 250 metres tall, the DC Tower took six years to build

Spanning 18 of the total of 58 floors, Meliá Vienna has 253 rooms and suites to welcome guests. Covering a total of 200 m² the Presidential Suite, complete with 180-degree panoramic views, is one of the biggest luxury suites to be found in any of Vienna’s hotels. The accommodation is accessed via a floating designer staircase; aside from Vienna, there are only three more of its kind in the world. This exclusive area has been laid with white marble (Bianco Sivec) from Italy. The suites have much darker and harder floors, made from black granite from South Africa. The Meliá Hotel Group commissioned ‘United Designers London’ to design the rooms. Their Danube-inspired waves are a recurring design element throughout the hotel, even on the exterior façade. To forge a link between interior and exterior and create shade, architect Dominique Perrault has installed mesh grids which resemble garden fences in front of the windows of the glass palace. On the ground floor is Meliá’s daytime restaurant Flow, and on the 57th floor is the gourmet restaurant 57 Restaurant & Lounge complete with spectacular views. In the bar on the floor above that, inventive alcoholic drinks and Mediterranean tapas are served until midnight. On Fridays and Saturdays, DJs play sets exclusively for the hotel’s international guests and locals enjoying a night out.

Service of the highest calibre

Wanzl products have been chosen to ensure exclusive comfort behind the scenes, including 15 Premium ZP Eco chambermaid trolleys, a particularly environmentally friendly housekeeping aid. “The Meliá Vienna is environmentally aware,” says Executive Housekeeper Birgit Zehethofer. “As a hotel business, we use resources sparingly. The design of the Wanzl chambermaid trolleys is ideal for a top-flight hotel. The trolley itself has plenty of space and everything is designed with practicality in mind. The model is smooth and manoeuvrable and even petite employees can easily steer and manoeuvre it.” Wanzl also supplied the GS-Compact and GS-Lobby luggage collection trolleys for transporting multiple bags and cases in the lobby. Meliá Vienna also has Wanzl minibar trolleys, laundry carts, transport baskets and the flexible Part Line 2000 guidance system. Spanish hotel chain Meliá, which operates more than 350 hotels in 35 countries on four continents, enjoys a long-standing and successful product partnership with Wanzl.
