The most attractive supermarket in the world

The Maximarkt on Glocknerstrasse in the Austrian town of Bruck received the “International Store Design Award” in the “Supermarkets” category in New York, successfully outperforming international competition from every continent.

The “International Store Design Award” is considered the “Oscar of retail” and is awarded by the “Institute of Store Planners”, which was founded in 1961.

The internationally renowned and experienced managers from the interior decoration and design sector awarded the prize to the Bruck Maximarkt in January 2005, on the basis that the brilliant store design is reflected in both the exterior design and the shop interior. The site, in Bruck near Salzburg, opened in October 2003, and is the seventh SPAR Austria Maximarkt. "SPAR is very proud of this unique achievement," Dr Gerhard Drexel, President of SPAR Austria, said enthusiastically after the announcement of this outstanding global honour. The New York prize is the second award for the store to date, which became the first Austrian company to receive the “Retail Interiors Award” in the “Best Food and Supermarket Design of the Year” category in 2004.

Both awards endorse the concept developed by Maximarkt, making the Bruck site the benchmark for subsequent family stores in Austria.

In collaboration with London-based planners at JHP Design, Maximarkt developed a shop design, which creates incentive to purchase over a space of 2,900 square metres. The focus is on making the articles easy to access and providing a good product overview. For this reason, the baskets are lower than usual, and the transparent shelving shifts the products into the foreground. Wide aisles make it easy to steer and manoeuvre the shopping trolleys.

Maximarkt has also created a new form of in-store communication:

large, emotive image motifs guide customers efficiently to the type of products they are looking for in the store's full service range. As a family retailer, Maximarkt places just as much emphasis on the needs of the younger generation: an interactive castle is waiting in the children's play area, and there's a changing area for younger children. A bistro, furnished in the style of a Tyrolean après bar, invites customers to take a break from shopping. Alternatively, the neighbouring Maximarkt restaurant is accommodated in a glass cube with a clear view of the impressive Hohe Tauern mountain landscape. The self-service restaurant has an additional external means of entry, enabling it to operate independently of the store opening times. The restaurant, with curved light waves fixed to the ceiling, is the prototype for future Maximarkt catering businesses.“
