Roll cages from Wanzl ensure smooth processes in Swiss hospitals

With 43 hospitals and institutes, over 980 beds, more than 500,000 outpatient visits and over 42,000 inpatients, the University Hospital of Zurich is one of the largest clinical facilities in Switzerland. Managing all of this effectively requires sophisticated intra-logistics for medical and non-medical consumables. Wanzl Material Handling was the ideal partner for this. Wanzl configured roll cages in such a way that they can be used both as order picking trolleys and as roll cages for truck transport. What's more, they are also ideal for distributing goods to medical and non-medical customers, can be used in tugger trains, and have low-noise rolling properties. Locking brakes on the castors also ensure greater safety and the lightweight design allows for comfortable handling. “The wide range of uses at various locations was of course a challenge. However, it was one we were able to overcome, thanks to our experience in the logistics industry and our flexible manufacturing capability,” said Markus Spengler, Head of Wanzl Material Handling.

Based on the good experience at the University Hospital of Zurich, Lucerne Cantonal Hospital also opted for a Wanzl solution tailored to the hospital’s needs: a specially manufactured tugger train-compatible roll cage, which is based on the roll cages at the University Hospital of Zurich. Logistics manager René Zettel of Lucerne Cantonal Hospital is impressed: “We are very satisfied with Wanzl’s work. The optimised roll cages we wanted do not slip, are directionally stable when empty and are completely quiet so that patients are not disturbed. Thanks to the design of the drawbar, no roll cages are lost on uneven surfaces and coupling and uncoupling is easy. It was important for us that the design of the roll cages enables optimised side loading and unloading and it is so light that it can also be easily guided by hand when loaded.”
